Confession time… We are self-professed sun chasers, but whenever there’s a bikini involved, you’ll find us covered head to toe in SPF 70+ with a large straw sun hat to cover our face. Our year round sun kissed glow is in reality, fake, and our skin is actually pretty fair. We couldn’t be more proud of the fact that we take protecting our skin as a #1 priority. If you’re like us and want a year round tanned skin, without damaging your skin, we are happy to share a few of our secrets to a natural looking tan.
1. Exfoliation is Key
We start our mornings off with a little body brushing to get our lymphatic system moving. If you’re not familiar with body brushing, it’s time to add this simple step into your beauty routine. Not only does it leave your skin feeling incredibly soft in a way that exfoliators won’t, it has so many incredible health benefits such as stimulating your lymphatic system, which in turn helps to rid your body of the harmful toxins we absorb on a daily basis, and breaks down cellulite and increases your energy and circulation! Did we mention it helps with ingrown hairs as well? Start by brushing your skin in wide circular, clockwise motions, using light pressure, especially in areas where your skin in thin. Brush your feet, legs, then mid-section, and save your arms for last. Always brush upwards towards your armpits to reap the full benefits of getting your lymphatic system moving. We usually do this before showering.
If you need a little extra exfoliation, we love the Necessaire Body Exfoliator, because it’s a clean beauty product that contains AHA/BHA, which helps exfoliate the skin gently, unlike other harsh scrubs out there.
2. Body Oil is a Game Changer
If you aren’t glowing like a just basted turkey after the shower and before you go to bed, then you’re doing something wrong. We recently switched from using body lotions to body oils and it has been an absolute game changer. After exfoliating and fresh out of the shower, we cover ourselves head to toe in our favorite body oil. Body oil is thicker than lotion and helps create a barrier that locks in hydration much better than a regular body lotion. Body oil also help reduce stretch marks and improves the overall quality of your skin. We are currently obsessed with all natural Shop Newroo Co. No. 43 Santal Body Oil, the smell is incredible. We use it all over our body, paying extra attention to rough patches
If you’re about to use a self tanner, we recommend putting on your body oil on in the shower and waiting a few minutes to let it all soak in before applying any tanning products. Some people think that this might prevent the tan from soaking in, but we find that it helps create a more even tan and helps the product glide on easier.
3. Our Favorite Tanning Products
When it comes to self tanning products, our go to is the Lux Unfiltered No. 32 Gradual Self Tanning Lotion, made by the queen of the at home glow, Sivan Ayla. These products are clean, vegan + cruelty-free, and smell incredible, without leaving you smelling like fake tan. The product goes on easy and has a gradual build, so you can use it daily depending on the level of tan you want to achieve.
4. The Sun Kissed Glow
Once our skin is tan, we love applying a body blur lotion, oil or stick to enhance that sun kissed look. Patrick Ta Body Glow Oil and Lux Unfiltered No. 10 Body Blur lotion both add a little extra glow with a hint of shimmer to give you that fresh off a day at the beach, followed by a blissful nap in air-conditioned crisp white sheets, kind of bronze. You know exactly what we’re talking about.
Top it all off with a dab of Voyage Et Cie Malibu 77 Parfum Oil, which smells faintly of coconuts and sea salt, to keep you in the tropical mood all year long.
