April 30, 2025

Where Is the French Riviera vs. Provence?

Let’s clear up one of the most common questions first: What’s the difference between the French Riviera and Provence, France?

The French Riviera—also known as the Côte d’Azur—is the glittering coastal stretch that runs along the Mediterranean Sea from Saint-Tropez to Menton, hugging the Moanaco and Italian border. It’s home to glamorous spots like Cannes, Antibes, and Cap d’Antibes, as well as legendary beach clubs and world-famous South of France luxury hotels.

Just inland, Provence offers a totally different kind of beauty—rolling vineyards, olive trees, idyllic hilltop towns, and lavender fields that look like paintings in real life. Here, things feel slower, softer, more rustic. It’s nestled deep in the heart of Provence where you’ll find wellness centres and boutique hotels housed in old farm houses, historic old villages, Rose vineyards and famous French perfumeries.

Both The French Riviera and Provence are located within the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE SOUTH OF FRANCE?

If you’re ready to book your dream trip to the South of France and wondering when to go, timing is everything.

As a part-time resident of London, I’ve learned that most Europeans tend to avoid Europe in the popular Summer months, and instead opt to visit their favorite warm weather destinations in the shoulder months of the high season.

The summer months of July and August are peak season, especially along the beautiful beaches of the Côte d’Azur. You’ll get the buzziest energy, but also the biggest crowds—and the highest prices. If you’re hoping to visit the best hotels in South of France, book early and prepare for restaurant, beach clubs and hotel reservations to fill up fast and far in advance.

For a more relaxed (and often more magical) vibe, I always recommend the shoulder season: late May to mid-June or early September through October. The weather is still blissfully warm—I’ve had cloudless 80-degree days even in mid May. The best part? The crowds are thinner, the energy is slower, and the best boutique hotels in the South of France are easier to book. Plus, prices tend to dip, and there’s a certain calm that makes the whole region feel like a dreamy escape.

HOW TO GET TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

Getting to the South of France is surprisingly easy. The region is served by two main international airports: Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) for the French Riviera and Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) near the heart of Provence.

During the high season, there are direct flights from major cities like New York, London, and Los Angeles—making it easy to get to the South of France from the USA or Europe.

PRO TIPS FROM A LUXURY TRAVEL PLANNER

  • Flights are often cheaper on weekdays and outside of July/August.
  • For the best deals, book early—and always plan around the summer months if you’re hoping to catch the region at its most iconic.

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in the South of France?

Choosing where to stay in the South of France is like curating your own little love affair with the region, and it can feel confusing if you’ve never visited before.

THE BEST TOWNS IN THE FRENCH RIVIERA

The South of France might look compact on a map, but it’s surprisingly spread out. The French Riviera alone stretches over 100 miles from Saint-Tropez in the west to the Italian border in the east. With winding coastal roads and glittering towns worth lingering in, driving from one end to the other can easily take three hours—and that’s without stopping for rosé breaks. That’s why I always recommend choosing just one or two areas to focus on, and giving yourself at least three to four days in each.

If you base yourself in the western Riviera, you’ll have easy access to Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Antibes—all glitzy, glamorous, and buzzing with beach clubs and boutique shopping.

Saint-Tropez is legendary—and for good reason. It’s not just for the yacht crowd. There’s a bohemian side, too. Stay in town to be within walking distance of the famous Place des Lices, chic boutiques, and beach clubs—or head to Ramatuelle for a more laid-back, under-the-radar vibe

To the east, Cannes, Cap d’Antibes and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat are where understated wealth lives. Think old-world mansions, cliffside villas, and some of the best luxury hotels, restaurants and beach clubs the French Riviera has to offer.

Prefer a quieter, oceanside vibe? Head east toward Eze, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Menton, where the coastline feels more exclusive and the pace slows down in these idyllic rainbow hued towns on the sea.

And lastly, we’re officially giving you permission to skip Nice—in our opinion, it’s the least inspiring of the bunch.

THE BEST TOWNS TO STAY IN PROVENCE

Of course, you can also split your time between the coastal Riviera and the countryside charm of Provence, for the perfect blend of seaside chic and sun-soaked serenity.

When it comes to countryside charm, Provence is in a league of its own. For the dreamiest base, I always recommend Saint-Rémy or Aix-en-Provence—think sun-soaked pool days, vibrant farmers markets, and Michelin star farm-to-table dining surrounded by olive trees and lavender fields. The postcard-perfect villages of Gordes, Lourmarin, and Lacoste are better suited for day trips, where you can wander cobbled lanes and sip rosé in quiet town squares.

As for Arles, Avignon, and Marseille—they’re rich in history and can definitely be worth a quick visit, but I wouldn’t recommend them as your home base. They lean more urban and less charming, and don’t quite offer the slow, sun-drenched Provençal magic that most travelers are chasing.
