WHEN TO VISIT THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
As a part-time resident of London, I’ve learned that most people tend to avoid Europe in the popular Summer months of July/August, and instead opt to visit their favorite warm weather destinations in the shoulder months of June, September and October. I visited Saint-Tropez in early June and found that the weather was still warm and sunny, with daily temperatures of 80+ degrees and not a cloud in sight.
However, if you want to be in the heart of the action, feel free to visit the French Riviera in July or August, just be sure to book all of your flights, hotel accommodations and most importantly restaurant and beach club reservations far in advance.
Why visit Mallorca in the shoulder season:
- Fewer crowds: During the summer months, the French Riviera can be overrun with tourists. But in the off-season, you’ll have the beaches and villages to yourself.
- Lower prices: Accommodation and activities are typically cheaper in the off-season.
- More relaxed atmosphere: There’s a more laid-back vibe to the South of France in the off-season. You can take your time exploring and really savor the area’s unique charm.
HOW TO GET TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
Getting to South of France is a breeze, no matter where you’re coming from. The area has its own international airport, Nice International Airport (NCE), which is served by airlines from all over the world and direct flights from the US daily in the high season.
Tips from a seasoned Gypsetter:
- Fly into Nice Airport (NCE) during the off-season (May-June or September-October). Flights are typically cheaper during these months.
- Book your flights in advance. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to get a good deal.
- If you’re flying from a major city, such as New York or London, try to fly into Nice on a weekday. Flights are typically cheaper on weekdays than on weekends.

HOW TO CHOOSE WHICH TOWN TO STAY IN
Embarking on a summer escapade to the South of France is a journey into the heart of sophistication, where choosing the perfect town becomes an art form. With so many towns to choose from, picking a location for a home base while exploring the beautiful Côte d’Azur can be confusing.
The French Riviera is spread out, and driving from end to end can take over 3 hours. We recommend splitting your time between St Tropez and somewhere closer to Monaco, such as Cap Ferrat.
THE VIBE
Saint-Tropez is known as the Summer playground of the rich and famous, but don’t let that title scare you. My French muse Saint Tropez has surprisingly Bohemian vibes, with a mix of glitz and glamour mixed in. Here you’ll find the allure of stunning beach clubs, high-end boutiques and a nightlife scene that rivals that of any major hot spot city. For more of a laid back Bohemian vibe, we recommend staying closer to the Beach such as in Ramatuelle, and if you want to be in the heart of the action and a short walk from gourmet restaurants and nightclubs, we recommend staying in town.
Antibes whispers tales of history within its fortified walls and stunning ocean views. Cannes, the epitome of cinematic glamour, invites you to stroll the iconic Croisette and dine at the many infamous beach clubs along the Mediterranean Sea.
If you’re looking for darling countryside vibes that include strolls amongst delicious farmers markets, sipping Rose and lounging by the pool, Provence unfolds like a canvas of lavender fields and charming villages, a rustic haven for those seeking tranquility.
Closer to Monaco you’ll find the famous Cap Ferrat peninsula, perched on the glittering coastline, known for its luxury and seclusion. It’s where the Billionaires keep their summer homes and the famous crowd goes to relax and get away from the scene in Saint-Tropez. Lastly, as you make your way up the coast towards Monte Carlo, you’ll encounter the cliffside medieval village of Eze. Eze is a great little town to wander the streets, enjoy shopping and a cocktail with sea views, but keep in mind it’s a little quiet and doesn’t have direct beach access if you choose to stay here.
As you navigate the allure of these enchanting towns, you’ll find each possesses a unique charm, making the decision to skip Nice, an easy one. Nice to us feels like any other European city, and after spending two days exploring there, I didn’t find much to write home about.
We hope this guide helps you to navigate the charming towns of the French Riviera and most importantly, where to stay!
